Shade muttered under his breath as he paced his room back and forth. The fire in the hearth leaped around, casting dark shadows on the walls and sharpening the Ruler's cautiousness and wariness.
Finally, giving up, he sat down on his huge bed. He sighed. He had not slept in days. Looking out his window and pressing his face against the cold, humid glass, he breathed in. He could almost smell the cool, smoky, night air.
Wondering when he would finally be able to recover from his pain deep inside, he drifted off into a dream, or a nightmare, rather...

She had never really wandered through this part of the castle very much except as a very young girl, before she had become immortal. Thus she wondered why this room, the Throne Room, seemed so familiar to her. She traced the chair at the platform and heard muttering, very softly, before thrashing. It was coming from a room behind the throne room. Her curiousity perked and she wandered into the room that belonged to the Ruler of Rike. Ruler Shade. The room was dark but, she could easily make out the man in his bed, moving in a blur as if in the midst of a nightmare.
"Ruler Shade..." Kia called, in hopes that he would awake, if that didn't work, she shook him slightly.

Shade opened his eyes widely, completely unaware of what had happened. Turning to his side, he saw Kia standing next to him. Sitting up, he rubbed his eyes.
"Oh dear! What are you doing here...? Shouldn't you be in bed?" He reminded her gently. Tucking his long hair behind an ear, he sighed deeply.
"Sorry, little one, if I woke you up. I've been having nightmares, though I don't know why." Shade slid down from his bed, walking once again to the fire. Standing in front of it, the light cast from the fire made Shade seem nothing more than a gaunt shadow, emphasizing the dark bags under his eyes. Turning around, he questioned the little child in his room.
"What are you doing here, little one?"

Little One!? She mused, indignant that he had called her that, especially since she was immortal and way older than a mere 17 years! She just only thought like her physical age and had the wisdom of an elderly.
"I wasn't waken. I live farther away from this side of the castle than you know. I'm the immortal princess." Kia assured him, almost letting the 'and I'm not a little one' out of her mouth but, she snapped her mouth shut with an audible click of her teeth together. Ruler Shade looked rather odd, with the lights of the room seeming to portray him as dark and mysterious.
"I'm 17." Kia felt the need to tell him. She realized what she had said and blushed furiously.

Shade blinked his eyes, studying the girl standing next to him. Smiling warmly he patted her head. "You're very cute." He laughed, his voice tired, but merry still.
"I see... I must apologize for my mistake." He swept her a deep bow. "Then, my little immortal princess, what should I call you?" He watched the girl in front of him in wonder. An immortal? He had heard of such a thing, but never expected to see one in his room, much less a princess...

She blinked as she registered the fact that Ruler Shade was tousling her hair, ruffling it slightly. Okay... Now he was just teasing her. His tone implied that he was still thinking of her as a little child.
The bow only slightly took her by surprise and Kiamii Ashten wondered what was best to respond with. She wondered if her name was known. After all, she had been alive for more than her 17 years, roughly about 30 perhaps but, she was still thinking like any teenage girl. Her growth and mind stunted, she never remembered how old she was supposed to be, for people came and went. The man in front of her had been a recent uphold status, Rulers. Before him had been just the creature kings of each kingdom, which did not go over as easy as many thought, so Rulers came about.
"I'm named Kia." She simply responded, sticking to a light heartened tone in her voice, offering a welcoming small smile, "and being an immortal, I have lived quite awhile." She neglected to mention that she could probably be older than him. She just didn't know if she was or not.

"Kia... What a pretty name." Testing the name, he smiled back. "Quite a while..." Shade looked off into the dark shadows beyond his windows... He was reminded of his darker past. Shaking his head, he turned back to Kia.
"Well, my name is Shade. It's a pleasure to meet you, Kia."

She registered the scent of the man's Sweet Primrose and an undertone of strawberry jam that emitted itself into the air. She was probably only eight inches shorter than him, almost a foot shorter. He had an air about him that confused and intrigued her young mind, causing her to give him a short smile.
"Likewise, sir." Kia said politely, inclining her head. She moved forward, peering around the room she had probably gone in as a small child. Her body remembered things that she herself could not, so she trusted her movements that led her to a stone brick that felt familiar in her hands.
She had been in here before, probably way long ago before she had been even the age of 17.
"So, what do Rulers such as yourself, do all day?" she asked innocently, resting her hand on the stone and marveling in the feeling. She had the desire to tug it, feeling as if something good would happen with it. Her midriff-lengthened checkered plaid blouse ruffled slightly s she stood there.

Shade laughed. "You needn't call me sir. You're free to call me Shade." He said. Cocking his head curiously, he watched as Kia walked along the walls of the room, stopping then feeling one of the bricks.
"Hmm, I guess we just sit around and be bored." He smiled. "Until our council yells at us and tells us we should actually be signing papers or attending some far off meeting in a distant conutry... Personally, me? I like to sit in the garden. Or train." Shade laughed wryly.
He watched curiously as Kia patted the brick. She was immortal, and it seems she was well accquainted with the casltle. Perhaps she was even older than he had originally perceived her to be.

"Alright... Shade." Kia said after only a slight hesitation in her words. The stone began to draw her in and she pushed into it, calling upon something she didn't know and would not realize it until later. Her hand sunk into the wall and slowly, the ground shook and the sound of rubble could be heard as a doorway made a path of its own into the blank wall that had been covered by nothing.
"The council huh?" Kia asked with a soft smile to the wall. She didn't know why but, the words he said sparked a flare of amusement inside her. She felt that it was rather odd the four rulers were also ruled by someone else. The council... So to speak, they were the gods and goddesses. Most importantly, the leader of it all was Fate herself. She couldn't remember much about the odd little immortal who had been the one to lay the "curse" of immortality on her 17-year-old body but, she remembered the odd sense of humor she had equipped herself with.
She turned back to Shade and inclined her head, "Wish to proceed with me, Shade?" She said with a wink, feeling her teenage persona replacing that odd little mask that slipped on her when a memory sparked her brain every now and then.

Shade was standing stock still, quite surprised at the turn of events. "Erm... Why not?" He said, smiling uncertainly. He walked up to the teenage girl and peered over her shoulder. "What's in there?"
As Shade prepared himself to follow Kia, he continued talking. "Yes, the coucil. They're all quite annoying to tell the truth. But the people I have the most trouble getting along with... are the nobles of other lands." He said hesitantly. "Do you know what I mean?"

Kia nodded her head lightly, understanding of what he meant. She smiled at him and continued forward, looking in slight interest as she did so. The path was with dirt and of darkness, she could almost taste some despair mingled in to the atmosphere from an older time than the present. She took a step towards the north, pulling out a flashlight that she had kept in her pockets in case she had another escapade as the one she had done when she was younger, the day she found Fate quite literally.
"I've met Fate before, the head of the council. I don't quite remember her now that I am immortal. She strikes up an odd familiarity to my mind though. What is it about the other nobles that you find most troubling Ruler Shade?" Kiamii asked with a hint of curiosity.

Eyes widening a little in wonder, Shade was more than a little nervous to follow Kia. How had she have known that was there? And more importantly... She had met Fate before? Well, she was an immortal princess... But just who was this interesting girl who called herself Kia?
The idea was hard to wrap his mind around, but Shade accepted it. He was used to not being able to comprehend something until he was only left with the empty skeletons of his memories and pain. Frowning and trying rid his head of the dark flashes of his past, he rushed after Kia.
"Nobles... I always have an unsettling feeling around them. They put on a mask for the world, as if they were nothing but empty husks inside. They turn their noses up at anything, no matter what." His voice grew bitter.
"They don't understand what it's like to be a real person. To experience the hardships of the world, the pain or anxiety. Most have been born with silver spoons in their mouths. Never have they asked themselves, 'What, or even more importantly, when is their next meal going to be?' No noble of our court would ever have to worry about... about whether or not they'll live to see the light of the next day, or even the next. The constant fear. It grows in you after awhile, and not even the softest bed or tastiest food will ever dull the shard edge."
Turning his head and wrapping his arms around himself, he shivered a little, even though the air wasn't chilly. But the coldness was not of the tunnel that he had felt. It was the claws of his past that had crawled up his spine.
"Nobles... it's an ironic word."
Realizing what he had burst out with, Shade covered his mouth, embarrased.
He needed to learn to contain his emotions. Because of his ruthlessness, many people already look down upon him. He did not want to offend Kia, but he couldn't help spilling his true feelings for these so-called "nobles."

She heard him following behind and hid a smile of her own, feeling her own emotions bubble around. She stopped and leaned against the rocks, her skirt (dressed as an above the knee length blue plaid style) fluttered about innocently and she studied her black converse that she had worn today. Her white blouse ruffled slightly as she was against the rock. Her eyes moved to study Shade as he spoke of hardships. Kia herself couldn't understand the true emotions of that, yet she felt that she had.
"They won't understand until they've faced those hardships, Ruler Shade. Rulers have very recently become existing by the council. You are in fact the very first Rike Ruler ever, if you must know. War is about the four kingdoms and I think that everyone will soon grow up from pain and of love. Being immortal, I've realized hardships of my own... I guess," Here Kia became confused with herself. She had not felt any saddness for a long time, so she was clueless on how to feel much of anything anymore that was negative.
"My mother and father were not immortal... I was born mortal until I found Fate literally on my 17th birthday. She gifted me with immortality... which I found a curse a long time ago... I think. I can't remember much from my mortal life but, I remember my friends all dying as I outlived them. My mother and father are gone and I've seen this kingdom shape itself. It's... confusing." Kia admitted, looking around. She smiled at Shade's words of Nobles being an ironic word.

Hardships...What did they really mean? Could they teach one to love? To become a good Ruler? Of course not. Being alive, one must be mad.
Shade looked at Kia with his large, sad eyes. This girl, seventeen, endowed with the "gift" of living lifetimes. How had she survived? Watching her friends and family die, it must have been so hard. So hard, to not feel like dieing too. He could not understand, and yet, he could.
On impulse, he pulled her into his arms and inside his heart, cried for the world...

Kiamii was seventeen for years on end and she never once felt an emotion that was dubbed 'mortal' feelings. Yet when she had turned around, to not face the man she had admitted this to, she was taken by surprise when arms wound around her and pulled her to him. Her cheeks flushed a faint red and she never could remember feeling like this. Her resolve would snap any second now and she leaned against Ruler Shade and closed her eyes.
"When the first of my friends began dying back when I should have been probably in my twenties, I felt impassive because we all knew that I would witness their deaths. When my parents died, they appointed a guardian because I would always be underage. Some humans have a hard time accepting that I'm immortal, and when the first human king came into power, he treated me as if I was 17 for good and was a brat to him. I go to the school every now and then... I... I... I just wish someone understood. What its like..." Kia said softly, a tear breaking from her hot and itchy eyes and streaming down her cheek. She did not look at Ruler Shade, not wanting to see any possible disgust he had.

Shade tightened his arms around this frail girl. Even without looking at her face, he could tell she was crying. His heart went out to her, trying to feel, trying to imagine the pains she had gone through. He wanted to understand. He wanted to make her feel better.
He closed his eyes. Focusing his entire consciousness on the girl in front of her, he watched as a tear rolled down her cheek. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. From that moment, he vowed. He would do anything to protect this girl, to keep her from harm. Even if she was immortal, she was still human and had the gift of a smile.

Instead of the disgust that she was afraid of happening, he seemed to feel something else. Instead of pushing her away, he held her closer. She blushed lightly at being held like a little girl. She leaned against him still, ignoring the thought. She rather appreciated the comfort. Kia's tears slid down her cheeks still and Kia couldn't take this anymore. She turned around and shook slightly, crying silently into the chest of Ruler Shade. The thought was embarrassing but she hadn't cried in so long. She hadn't had anyone to cry to. No comfort came for immortals, just hatred and mockery.
When she wept enough, she mumbled into his chest, "Sorry." For she was ashamed that she had broken down in front of this man. She was sorry that she was being so foolish.

"Please don't apologize." Shade said. He put a hand under her chin and raised her face to him. "No one should have been put through this. No one. But...to Fate... you, you had to be the one." Shade's heart went out to this ...damadged girl. He simply could not imagine the type of emotinal pain she had gone through. Losing everyone she had loved and cared for. What sick person would do this to anyone?
Running his had through her soft hair, he smiled wryly at her. "Shall we continue on into the passage?"
